Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, also the chancellor of state-run universities, is considering moving the Calcutta High Court against Jadavpur University for proceeding with its annual convocation on December 24, despite the governor's objections.
Sources from Raj Bhavan revealed that the chancellor has received legal advice to file a writ of quo warranto, challenging the university's unauthorized convocation. A writ of quo warranto is typically used to contest an individual's right to hold a public office.
The controversy unfolded when the governor removed interim Vice-Chancellor Buddhadeb Sau on Saturday after the university decided to proceed with the annual convocation against the chancellor's objections. However, the state government promptly reinstated Sau, and the convocation took place on Sunday.
Despite the governor's actions, Sau delegated powers to the pro-vice-chancellor, who conducted the event and awarded degrees to students, with the certificates presented by Sau. The governor is now seeking legal advice on whether he can grant post facto approval to the convocation to validate the degrees awarded.
